Scout Meeting 19th Sep 2009

1 week of school holiday is over, and we are back to Scouting! The Cubs looked so eager and energetic!

After the usual flag break, Akela started the meeting by telling the Cubs the GOOD news! We will be going to Jurong Bird Park next week. A special progamme has been planned for them to learn about pelicans, our mascot. The Cubs not only get to see the Pelicans, they will also get to feed them. The next highlight of the outing is the water play at the Splash and Slide station, which involves getting wet! The Cubs went wild the moment they heard they would be able to play with water and get wet. Akela reminded the Cubs to bring along their swimming attire and towel.

Akela then returned the scout logs. He was very pleased with the quality of the logs, and he commented that the Cubs had put in a great deal of effort in doing up the logs, so much so that he awarded 3 first places, 2 second places and 2 third places.

First place (30 points)

1. Wallaby,

2. Kookaburra

3. Emu

Second place (20 points)

1. Wombat 2

2. Echidna

Third place (10 points)

1. Bilby

2. Koala

As a pre-activity for next week, Akela talked about the character value of the Pelican. The Pelican embodies the value of Generosity. It gives in 9 different ways.

1. Pelicans give honor

2. Pelicans give shelter

3. Pelicans give rides to their neighbors

4. Pelicans give information without making a sound, with different signals and body language

5. Pelicans give food to their young

6. Pelicans give food to others, even their enemies

7. Pelicans give nests to their mates

8. Pelicans give their time

9. Pelicans give food in place of wrong

Akela hoped that the Cubs would follow the Pelican and learn to give generously too! In order to reinforce the value of the Pelican - Generosity - Akela played the 1st game of the day. Every group was to prepare a mime to display one way a Pelican shows generosity. 15 minutes were given to the Cubs to prepare.

Next, Bagheera conducted the game. Bagheera assigned every group to mime out 1 way of how Pelicans show their generosity. The rest of the Cubs were to to guess what it represented. 30 points was awarded to Emu, Wombat 1 and Wombat 2. 20 points was awarded to Platypus and Possum. 10 points was awarded to the rest of the Six.

The 2nd game we played was the Paper Bag Relay. Cubs were asked to design a mask with the brown paper bags given to them. The paper bag was not big enough for the older cubs and they were asked to cut the side in order to fit them. Next the cubs had 2 races. In the first race, Wombat 2 came in first (50 points), Bilby came in second (30 points) and Wombat 1 (20 points) came in third. In the second race, Emu came in first (50 points), Platypus came in second (30 points) and Bilby (20 points) came in third.

Before the flag break ceremony, Akela gave out consent forms for next week's activity. Cubs were reminded that a reply was compulsory, even if they were not participating . Deadline for submission is on 23 September 2009 to the Scout letterbox. Late submission will not be accepted and will be treated as absenteeism. Those Cubs absent today would have to get their consent forms from Ms Tan (General Office Pigeon Hole Number 1).

The meeting ended with the flag break ceremony, the Sunset Party.

Sixers' Council as usual for the Sixers.
