World Scout Day 2015, 22nd February 2015

WORLD SCOUT DAY 2015 22 FEBRUARY 2015
MESSAGE FROM MR TAN CHENG KIONG CHIEF SCOUT COMMISSIONER SINGAPORE SCOUT ASSOCIATION

Dear Brother and Sister Scouts,

1 This year we are celebrating 105 years of the Scouting Movement. The theme for World Scout Day 2015 is “Towards a 21st Century Competent Scout Movement”.

2 To thrive in a fast-changing world, knowledge alone is not sufficient. It is important to have 21st century competencies and values as well. Our programmes will help you learn to be loyal, trustworthy, kind, self-disciplined, courageous and resilient.

3 One example I would like to highlight is the 4th Brunei National Jamboree that took place last year. When our Scouts attended the camp in Brunei, they exchanged their Scouting knowledge with those from other countries. Through the activities, they also learnt more about the culture of Brunei. The jamboree was a good way for our Scouts to develop global awareness and cross-cultural skills.

4 I would like to encourage all Scouts to participate actively in the programmes we organise so as to enrich your Scouting experience and develop 21st Century Competencies. Gabriel Tham, a President Scout, said, “Scouting brings about good character building and development that serves me well in life. It has taught me to be a team player, to be a good leader, a trustworthy man and most importantly, be kind to others.”

5 As we celebrate our nation’s golden jubilee, we have planned an international jamboree at the end of the year. One key activity of the jamboree is a community engagement project where you will mingle with everyday Singaporeans and learn how you can also contribute to make Singapore a better place. Do be prepared to come and celebrate with us at our SG50 Jamboree!

6 I would like to take the opportunity to thank school leaders for your continuous support; Unit leaders for nurturing our Scouts; and parents for believing in our values- based programmes.

7 I wish all of you a happy World Scout Day 2015.
